FAA Workers Fly Free on Vacations in Abuse of Program
FAA employees are traveling free to popular vacation spots on commercial airliners in an abuse of a program intended to ferry them at no cost as part of their official duties, according to a government audit reported Tuesday.
In response to the audit by the Transportation Department’s inspector general, FAA Administrator David Hinson said his agency had taken immediate steps to tighten controls and oversight of the free-travel program.
“I will not tolerate abuse of agency programs by employees--not now or in the future,” Hinson said in a statement released by the Federal Aviation Administration after NBC News reported details of the audit, citing instances in which FAA employees traveled free to London, Munich and Las Vegas.
