There are 365 1/4 days in a year- the short way of saying the Earth rotates on its axis 365 1/4 times during one revolution around the sun. It would be inconvenient to have a calender with an extra quarter day at the end of each year, so this quarter is saved for four years, and a whole day is added all at once. This “Leap Day” is added to February because that was the last month of the year in the ancient Roman calender.
