From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Drawing on the experience of his own family, President Clinton announced creation of a hotline to aid victims of domestic violence. The hotline will penetrate the isolation in which family violence often thrives, saving lives and giving “childhood back to all the children in this country,” Clinton said at a ceremony attended by family advocates and lawmakers. Clinton said that his mother, who was beaten by her husband, could have benefited from the service. Callers to (800) 799-SAFE will be referred to counselors or be transferred to shelters or police agencies.
