Engineers Honor Peers, Best Projects

More than 250 of the best problem solvers in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties gathered this week at the Oxnard Hilton to honor their own at a banquet and awards dinner.

Civil engineers from both counties celebrated National Engineers Week on Thursday night and meted out awards for the best projects in the region in 1995.

“It’s engineers helping engineers to come up with better projects and recognize that partnering with each other is a real big plus for the entire region,” said Vivian Goo, a Navy engineer in the Point Mugu public works department.

“We save money, we share ideas and help improve engineering,” she said.

Engineer of the Year awards were presented to Kirsten Meeker, another Point Mugu engineer who was honored for research and development; Kevin M. Cough of InfoTec Development, recognized for community service, and Marvin O. Miller, a Port Hueneme Seabee base engineer honored for system design.

Two engineering feats that received honors as projects of the year were the Todd Road Jail facility supervised by Ventura County public works and a waste-water treatment plant at the Port Hueneme base.

Local engineers also awarded five $1,000 scholarships to engineering students at UC Santa Barbara and Westmont College.

Goo urged engineering students at Oxnard, Moorpark and Ventura colleges to apply for the scholarships next year.
