Let Council’s Vote on Housing Stand

Share

The Santa Paula City Council has angered many citizens with a 3-2 vote endorsing two low-income housing projects.

While this is certainly a controversial matter, I am confident that the council acted in what each member perceived as the best interests of the people of Santa Paula. Those who voted for this project did so because they see a compelling need to provide decent, affordable housing for low-income working families. Those who voted against it did so because of their bona fide concern that the city already has a glut of low-income housing along with the social problems which arise with this condition.

There are no grounds for a recall, as has been suggested. The recall is an important civil procedure which is too often abused. It would be proper to use it when an official has abused his authority to enrich himself; it is never proper to use it because we disagree with a decision.

I am thankful for the good government that we have in Santa Paula.
