BLACK HISTORY: Calvary Baptist Church of Pacoima will celebrate Black History Month on Sunday with a 7 p.m. program of choir music and speakers.

The speakers will include Linsey Hughes, founder of the MacDonald’s Gospelfest; poet Makeda Cannon reading from her newly published “Under the Spell of God,” and King Carter, who teaches in Cal State Northridge’s writing program. The church is at 12928 Vaughn St.

LABYRINTH WALKING: A weekend retreat to be led by the Rev. Lauren Artress of San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral and featuring a replica of a labyrinth drawn on the floor for meditative purposes will be held March 8 through 10 at the Holy Spirit Retreat Center, 4316 Lanai Road, Encino.

“Walking the labyrinth is a long-forgotten, mystical practice and helps seekers from all spiritual traditions to rediscover a tool of integration for body and mind, psyche and spirit,” the Catholic-run retreat center said in an announcement.

RELIGIOUS MANAGEMENT: A daylong seminar on “Management for Religious-Oriented Organizations” will be taught Wednesday at the Cal State Northridge campus.

The Extension department course, which will meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., is designed for clergy, church and school administrators. The fee is $95. (818) 885-2786.

LENTEN TALKS: A series of three Monday-night talks on “Loving Yourself” will be offered, starting at 7 p.m. Monday, at St. Andrew and St. Paul Old Holy Catholic Church, 346 Riverdale Drive, Glendale. PURIM HOLIDAY: The Jewish holiday of Purim, commemorating an oppressed minority’s victory over the threat of annihilation, will be celebrated over several days in early March by Jewish synagogues.

Among the festivities are a Purim carnival at 4 p.m. Friday at Kol Tikvah, 20400 Ventura Blvd., Woodland Hills, followed by a creative Purim service and readings at 7:30 p.m. Valley Beth Shalom in Encino will hold its carnival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 3, followed by family services the next day at 5 and 7 p.m.
