Salt Lake High School Students Protest Club Ban
Hundreds of high school students walked out of classes Friday to protest the school board’s decision to ban all extracurricular clubs rather than sanction a homosexual club. One student was run over by a car and critically injured.
About 200 students marched from West High School to a rally on the steps of the state Capitol.
En route, a 14-year-old sophomore was run over by a car driven by another student and suffered critical injuries.
At East High School, where a gay and lesbian student alliance triggered the school board’s ban, about 400 students chanted protests across the street from the school.
“It’s not about being gay. It’s about letting students decide what clubs they should belong to,” said Andrew Latta, a freshman at East.
The Salt Lake City Board of Education voted 4-3 last week to ban all extracurricular organizations rather than allow homosexual students to form a club at East.
