EXAMINING THE WORD

I have a concern about the article about Alan Weisman’s father as it relates to The Times’ tendency toward liberal political correctness (“Unraveling the Mystery of My Father,” Jan. 21). Weisman writes: “Today, whenever Newt Gingrich and his ilk appear on TV, justifying their pogrom against the poor . . . .”

How dare the author use the word pogrom in such a context? Does he know what a pogrom involves? Murder. Killing. Is Weisman trying to say that’s what Gingrich is about?

One may disagree with Gingrich, but to imply that he is somehow equivalent to the Cossacks is liberal demonization at its best.
