Teens to Get Glimpse of Working World

About 40 high school juniors and seniors will get a taste of life as a marketing director, banker, restaurateur, attorney or financial planner Thursday as part of the Encino Chamber of Commerce’s “Day With Business.”

The annual career day will give students from Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies and Birmingham and Reseda high schools a real-life picture of a career by following a business professional for half a day, said Lara Sirimarco of the chamber.

“High school students have no idea what being an accountant is like,” she said. “This way, they can see it and decide if this is what they want to do.”

Joyce McShane, marketing director for Reseda Care Center, said she was allowing a student to follow her for altruistic reasons.

“I hope to give my time to a student . . . and to impart information to the student about what marketing is and what marketing is in health care,” she said.

Once shadowing has ended, the students and their mentors will meet for lunch at Encino Glen Restaurant.

A side benefit of the program, Sirimarco said, is that some students end the day with summer job offers.
