City Considers Repair of Basketball Courts

The City Council is considering whether to spend about $16,500 to renovate outdoor basketball courts at Tustin High School, but members were divided recently on whether the city should pick up the full tab.

City officials said the neighborhood, near San Juan and Orange streets, has few recreational facilities. They have suggested a joint project under which the school would allow the courts to be used by the public after school hours.

“We don’t have parks anywhere around there,” Mayor Jim Potts said. “There’s no place for kids to play.”

During a recent meeting, some council members criticized the Tustin Unified School District for allowing the courts to deteriorate.

“We are becoming a Superfund for the school district,” said Councilman Jeffery M. Thomas, referring to the federally funded program to rehabilitate toxic sites. “I’m willing to front the dough, but I’m not willing to just give the district $16,000 of taxpayers’ money.”

According to a city report, the 12 basketball courts must be resurfaced, sealed and restriped. The backboards, rims and nets must be replaced.

The district has scheduled a meeting with city officials on April 29 to discuss funding options.
