Update / Follow-up on the news : High School Submits Drug Test Proposal

Share

Bolstered by community support, officials at Corona del Mar High School have submitted a plan to give drug tests to student athletes.

A campus booster club approached officials at the Newport Beach high school last fall about starting such a program. Response from athletes, parents and coaches has been overwhelmingly positive.

Principal Donald K. Martin said more than 95% of the parents who responded to his query said they were in favor of drug testing.

The random tests will screen athletes for use of drugs such as alcohol, marijuana, amphetamines and cocaine.

Martin said the school has gone to great length to ensure the privacy of any students who test positive for drug and alcohol use. Only their parents will be notified of the results, he said.

Martin said the school’s proposal must be reviewed by attorneys for the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, after which school board trustees will vote on it.
