BIG SPENDER: What does an entertainment production mean to the local economy? One answer comes from “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,” which last year pumped $436,300 into the economies of Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks, according to the National Park Service. The park service runs Paramount Ranch in Agoura Hills, where the CBS show is filmed. . . . The show is set in Colorado, and producers bought everything from ice to potato flakes for use as fake snow. “They buy lumber all the time to build sets and hay and feed for the horses,” said park service spokeswoman Jean Bray.

PICKUP GAME: Ten years as a competitive gymnast have given Chatsworth High’s Kim Pickup an eye-catching style on the soccer field (C8). . . . Pickup performs a front handspring while clutching the ball, above, to gain momentum on her sideline throw-ins. It’s an impressive feat, but also controversial. Many colleges and schools have banned it because of the risk of injury, said Loyola Marymount soccer Coach Peter Novakovic.
