Gas Station Threat to Quality of Life
* I would like to add my voice in opposition to the proposed Texaco gas station at the corner of Kanan and Lindero. Most of us moved to Oak Park for the “quality of life.” While that may be a nebulous concept to Texaco, it is a gut, common-sense feeling that all of us know.
When I first heard about this gas station, I said, “No, this is exactly the reason we moved here--to get away from gas stations and mini-marts on every corner.” That night I started to solicit signatures from my neighbors (almost 1,000 so far) against the proposal. Many of them, upon hearing of the project for the first time, expressed similar horror. In fact, on the first night, I was able to get everyone on the block to sign.
Why was this so easy? Because, in addition to the myriad arguments about traffic, crime and pollution, we all have that same gut feeling that this project does nothing to enhance and only detracts from our “quality of life.”
Before a project is built, an environmental impact report is done to make sure that animals and plants aren’t harmed. How about a social environmental impact report to protect the fabric of life in Oak Park? We have managed just fine without a gas station in our neighborhood and prefer to keep it that way.
