World IN BRIEF : TURKEY : Premiership Changes Hands in Coalition

Acting Prime Minister Tansu Ciller, Turkey’s first female leader, handed over power to fellow conservative and former rival Mesut Yilmaz. The new government, which must be ratified by a vote of confidence next week, will end five months of political paralysis and keep from power NATO-member Turkey’s resurgent Islamists. Yilmaz and Ciller had signed an accord over the weekend to set up an alliance in which the premiership will be rotated between them.
