WASHINGTON — Robert L. Gallucci, the U.S. diplomat who played a key role in freezing North Korea’s nuclear program and now oversees the Bosnian peace accord, is resigning to become dean of the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service.
His departure May 1 follows that of Richard Holbrooke, the chief U.S. negotiator on Bosnia-Herzegovina, even as the Clinton administration pursues diplomatic overtures to rival ethnic groups in Bosnia to keep the settlement of the war on track.
In a statement Friday, Secretary of State Warren Christopher praised the 50-year-old Gallucci as one of the most effective government officials he has known. Christopher named John Kornblum, who is succeeding Holbrooke as assistant secretary of state for European affairs, to take on the job of overseeing implementation of the Bosnian accord.
