GM Unit Ordered to Repay Customers $4.3 Million: A Superior Court judge in Sacramento found that General Motors Acceptance Corp. unit unfairly bought auto insurance coverage for longer than most customers needed, then refunded less than it had promised when they obtained new insurance. Judge James L. Long ordered GMAC to correct its records and credit its customers for the overcharges. GMAC attorneys said they will ask the judge to reconsider his ruling before it becomes final Sunday or they will appeal the case. The suit was filed on behalf of 116,000 California customers whose car loans were financed by GMAC from February 1989 through August 1994. A jury last July awarded $1.8 million in damages. Long’s decision increases that award and adds $419,000 in interest.
