The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday offered $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the murder of Dr. Haing S. Ngor.
Ngor, best known locally for his Academy Award-winning performance in the movie “The Killing Fields,” was shot to death near Chinatown on Feb. 25 around 8:30 p.m. as he got out of his car.
Los Angeles Police Department detectives have exhausted all clues and believe no more leads will develop without assistance from the community.
The reward was proposed by Councilman Mike Hernandez.
Ngor, 55, survived the massacres that swept through his native Cambodia from 1975 to 1979 under the rule of Pol Pot. An estimated 1.7 million Cambodians were killed during Pol Pot’s reign of terror. Ngor came to America in 1980 and in 1984 played a major role in “The Killing Fields,” for which he won the best supporting actor award. Ngor donated most of his royalties from the movie to Cambodian causes.
Anyone with information regarding the case can contact Det. Bert Luper at (213) 485-2531.
