Madison Avenue to Campaign for Votes: The advertising industry, enjoying an embarrassment of riches in the estimated $500 million worth of campaign ads that will hit TV this year, is planning to give something back. The Advertising Council, a coalition of communications industry volunteers, is launching a new campaign that will put at least $50 million worth of free ad spots on TV in a get-out-the-vote campaign. Bates USA, a unit of London-based Cordiant, has created ads that will begin airing this month. The campaign features two kinds of 30-second spots featuring people saying why they do or don’t vote. “Vote for Yourself” is a slogan carried on all the ads, which will run primarily on TV stations and also have newspaper and radio versions based on the same content.
