School Board Eyes Higher Developer Fees
Developers may soon have to pay higher fees to compensate the Orange Unified School District for increased student rolls brought on by new housing.
The school board voted unanimously to pursue a hike in developer fees.
Assistant Supt. Stanley Oswalt urged board members to take advantage of a recent decision by the State Allocation Board to allow districts to raise developer fees.
By raising fees on new residential construction from $1.56 to $1.84 per square foot and from 26 cents to 30 cents on commercial square feet, the district could generate an extra $190,000 per year in revenue, he said.
Last year, $1.3 million of the district’s $107-million budget came from developer fees.
The board agreed to pay a consultant $4,000 to complete a state-required study justifying the increase and to then hold a public hearing.
