Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Woman Raped While in Coma Gives Birth
A woman who was raped while in a coma had a premature baby at the University of Rochester, N.Y., in what doctors believe is the first case of someone getting pregnant and giving birth in a chronic vegetative state. The 2-pound, 11-ounce boy and his mother, 29, appeared to be doing well, a doctor said. The woman’s family decided to go ahead with the pregnancy rather than seek an abortion and are said to be considering raising the child. The woman suffered head injuries and lapsed into unconsciousness when her car skidded on ice and crashed into a tree near Ithaca, N.Y., in 1985. Several employees, ex-employees and visitors are suspected of the rape, but no arrests have been made.
