Obituaries : Olive Smith Myers; Seamstress, Quilter

Olive Smith Myers, a longtime Ventura County resident, died Monday in an Oxnard convalescent hospital after a brief illness. She was 91.

Myers was born April 22, 1904, in Bado, Mo., the oldest of eight children. She was a 59-year resident of the county, last residing in Ventura.

“She was a very family oriented woman and quite a powerhouse in her day,” said her daughter, Beverly Smith of Ventura. “She sewed clothes for me as I was growing up and also for my daughters as they were growing up.”

Myers was a homemaker, and master seamstress and quilter. She enjoyed making strawberry jam and cooking. She was also a member of Rebekah Lodge 739 in Missouri.

In addition to Smith, she is survived by her sisters, Eula France of Piru, Gussie Abel of Red Bluff and Aline Hayes of Moorpark, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jim Wells officiating. Burial will follow in Bardsdale Cemetery in Fillmore.

Memorial donations may be made to the Ventura unit of the American Cancer Society.
