Homer Groening; Cartoonist and Filmmaker

Homer P. Groening, 76, the cartoonist and filmmaker for whom the animated character Homer Simpson was named. Groening was the father of Matt Groening, who created the prime-time television cartoon “The Simpsons,” and was a cartoonist and advertising executive. He also produced several films about water, including “Get Wet,” “Getting Wetter” and “Psychedelic Wet.” The original Homer was a founding director of the American Advertising Museum in Portland. His son considered him a major influence in the development of his career. On March 15 in Portland, Ore., of cancer of the lymph system.
