CLU Steps Up in Class, Gets Stepped On, 20-0

USC, an NCAA Division I power, pounded out 20 hits and four Trojan pitchers limited Division III Cal Lutheran to one hit as USC routed the Kingsmen, 20-0, in a nonconference baseball game Thursday at USC.

Freshman Mike Penney (1-0) held Cal Lutheran (18-5-1) hitless for five innings and freshman Jason Saenz followed with two hitless innings. Mitch Brim had an eighth-inning single for the Kingsmen’s only hit.

Greg Walbridge had a two-run home run for USC (20-5).

Cal Lutheran starter Andrew Barber (4-2) allowed three runs in three innings.

Ventura 6, Moorpark 5--Rick Collier singled home Joseph Jauregui with two out and the bases loaded in the ninth inning for the Pirates (11-9, 5-5) in a WSC North Division game at Ventura.

Oxnard 12, Hancock 4--Matt Buttell had three hits and five runs batted in for the Condors (15-6, 8-2) in a WSC North Division game at Hancock.

Pierce 9, Mission 5--Mike Glendenning had three hits and three RBIs for the Brahmas (13-8, 5-4) in a WSC South Division game at El Cariso Park.

Amador Solis had three hits and drove in two runs for Mission (9-13, 2-8).

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

North Hollywood 10, Monroe 0--Merrill Dunn (2-0) had two doubles and was the winning pitcher in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at North Hollywood (4-5, 2-1). The Huskies had eight hits in a nine-run third inning.

Sylmar 14, Van Nuys 3--Ralph Velazco had a bases-loaded triple in an eight-run third inning for the Spartans in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.

Reseda 6, Grant 3--Alfredo Sanez hit a three-run home run for Reseda (2-1, 2-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Sanez had a solo home run Tuesday against Grant.

Notre Dame 9, Dalles (Ore.) 1--Marc Jannone had a double and two-run home run in a nonleague game at Notre Dame. Nick Galvan (1-2) had a no-hitter for four innings and pitched five scoreless innings.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Chaminade 2, Lynwood 1--Dana Preston (1-2) struck out five, walked three and pitched a five-hitter as the Eagles (3-3) advanced to the semifinals of the Redondo tournament.

The winning run scored on a bases-loaded walk in the sixth. Kelly Durkin had two hits for Chaminade.

Saugus 3, Quartz Hill 0--Jamie Gillies (5-1) pitched a one-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Centurions (8-2) in a nonleague game at Saugus.
