Tight Schedule Knocks Mission Off Buchanan’s Campaign Trail

Republican presidential candidate Patrick J. Buchanan had planned to attend Mass at the San Buenaventura Mission today, but canceled due to time constraints in his California campaign tour.

“Unfortunately, his schedule had to change,” said Diana Banister, a campaign worker in Los Angeles. “He is not going to get there in enough time to go to Mass.”

Originally, Buchanan had planned to stop at the 214-year-old mission en route to a rally in Santa Barbara.

But a later flight to Los Angeles from San Jose, paired with plans to meet with avocado growers at the Bliss Land Avocado Grove in Carpinteria on Sunday morning, left no time for church services, Banister said.

Msgr. Patrick J. O’Brien said the conservative candidate could still change his mind and is welcome at the mission any time.

“We are very used to visitors from near and far,” O’Brien said. “Ours is a church of saints and sinners, so we welcome everyone who comes.”
