Flames and smoke from a brush fire forced authorities to evacuate visitors as well as animals from Miami’s Metrozoo. Zoo officials said several thousand customers were ordered to leave as heavy smoke from the 100-acre wildfire drifted over the zoo just south of Miami. Zoo workers wearing bandannas over their faces bundled slow-moving tortoises into makeshift stretchers and scrambled to evacuate other animals. Officials said the blaze was contained by nightfall.
