After reading the Feb. 4 Weekend Escape on Carlsbad (“Blue Highways”), I planned the exact trip as a surprise to my wife. We, too, stayed at the Pelican Cove Inn--an adorable inn, and Nancy was the perfect hostess--and had dinner at the Fish House Vera Cruz, which was definitely above average, considering our spoiled Los Angeles restaurant demeanor. Antique dealers were befriended and happy by the time we left the main streets of Carlsbad with small trinkets and furniture. Finally, an hourlong flight in one of the blue and red open-cockpit barnstorming biplanes was a blast.
It was an absolutely perfect weekend.
