Labor Department Unveils Antisweatshop Campaign: The awareness campaign is intended to enlist consumers in the battle against garment industry sweatshops. The announcement came on the 85th anniversary of New York’s tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Co. factory fire, which claimed 146 lives and drew attention to workplace safety hazards in the garment industry. Under the Labor Department’s new program, it will provide consumers its so-called Fashion Trendsetters list--a roster of “good guy” retailers and manufacturers judged to be taking steps to avoid buying merchandise from rogue contractors operating illegal sweatshops. For information, consumers can write to No Sweat, U.S. Department of Labor, Washington, DC 20210.
