Sacramento is jumping on the Internet bandwagon. Election returns from today’s California primary will be available, soon after the polls close at 8 p.m., on a World Wide Web site supported by Secretary of State Bill Jones.

Instant access to live results in the races for president, Congress, the Legislature and statewide ballot propositions can be found at: https://www.primary96.ca.gov

Jones also has put up his own home page, providing additional election-related information.

Internet users in Los Angeles and elsewhere also may soon be able to surf through information on thousands of California’s “most wanted” criminals, missing children and unsolved murders on the World Wide Web.

A bill pending in the Legislature would let the state Justice Department spend $145,000 to create a Web page that would list criminals, missing children and crimes from around the state, complete with pictures and, in some cases, video.

“It’s going from the days of Matt Dillon to the days of Buck Rogers,” said Sen. Ross Johnson (R-Irvine), author of the bill, which will be heard in a Senate committee next month.

“The Internet is now a tool law enforcement can use to get information out to the public,” Atty. Gen. Dan Lungren said at a Capitol news conference.

The bill would require the Justice Department to maintain an Internet directory of people wanted for more than 90 days on felony warrants, of missing children and of unsolved homicides.

Information would come from police and sheriff’s departments.

Lungren estimated that the page could include listings of 5,000 to 10,000 fugitives and 1,000 missing children.

For those who can’t wait for the state’s site to get up and running, the FBI maintains a Web site showing its 10 most wanted suspects.
