Wells-First Interstate Deal Reaches $13.3 Billion: On its last day of trading before being swallowed by Wells Fargo & Co., First Interstate Bancorp shares hit a record closing price of $173.50, up $4, on the New York Stock Exchange. Wells also hit a record close of $261.25, up $5.875. At that price, the merger, which closes at one second past midnight Monday, is worth $13.298 billion, apparently just edging out the $13.1-billion Chase Manhattan Corp.-Chemical Banking Corp. merger--which also closes Monday--as America’s biggest bank merger in terms of stock value. The new Chase, however, will be much larger, with assets of about $285 billion, compared with about $110 billion for the new Wells.
