The public is invited to a family Passover service and puppet show at Congregation B’nai Emet on Saturday at 10:30 p.m. The temple is located at 4645 Industrial St. in Simi Valley.

Barbara Poehls, a member of the Conejo Valley Symphony, and her children Aaron and Bethany will perform on the violin. The weeklong Passover holiday begins Wednesday evening.

The holiday celebrates the exodus of the Hebrews from bondage in Egypt with a Seder, or ritual meal. During the Seder, participants retell the story of Exodus, eat the special meal, sing and pray.

Among the items eaten are bitter herbs to remind participants of slavery’s bitterness, matzo to recall the haste of the flight, a mixture of wine, walnuts and apples to recall the mortar used to build Pharaoh’s cities, and parsley dipped in salt water to recall the tears of slavery.
