West Hills : Sen. Boxer Meets With Valley Jews

Share

More than 50 members of the Valley’s Jewish community met Monday with U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer as she discussed issues ranging from abortion and affirmative action to concerns about international terrorism and the ongoing peace process in Israel.

Speaking at an informal luncheon at the Bernard Milken Jewish Community Center, the California Democrat summed up the Congress’ partisan warfare as a constant battle about reopening old issues. She dubbed her Republican opponents “the back-to-the-future Senate.”

“Why are they talking about cuts that would end Medicare, and ending a woman’s right to choose? We already decided on these things in the ‘50s and ‘60s,” Boxer said. “Affirmative action began under Richard Nixon, for Christ’s sake!”

Jewish leaders and residents ate kosher box lunches as Boxer urged them to support Democrat Brad Sherman of Sherman Oaks in the upcoming race for the 24th District congressional seat, saying, “The House has been hijacked by the Gingriches and Dick Armeys.”

Boxer, introduced as a friend of the Jewish community, also reflected with sadness on the slaying of Yitzhak Rabin. She said she is fighting to stem all forms of terrorism and hopes to keep the peace process on track.
