World IN BRIEF : MONTSERRAT : Residents Evacuated as Volcano Seethes
Thousands of people packed up and left the shadow of Montserrat’s rumbling volcano, the third time in eight months that the volatile mountain had forced them from their homes. Authorities issued the evacuation order for as many as 5,000 residents living in the south end of this tiny British colony, including the capital, Plymouth, due to heightened activity within the volcano. Virtually dormant for about 100 years, the volcano rumbled to life in July. In August and again in December, thousands of southern residents were moved to public shelters and private homes in the north.
