Principals Consider Junior ROTC Program

The principals of Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s four high schools are considering applying to have junior ROTC on campus.

“We have a lot of students who are interested in outside organizations and I think it would be a good opportunity for them to explore,” said Estancia Principal Peggy Anatol. “It offers a lot of discipline.”

The four principals attended a meeting with a junior Reserve Officer Training Corps instructor to discuss the program. No decision has been made, according to Anatol, because the principals want to know how much it will cost and whether they have enough space for a group to train.

Anatol added that the principals will discuss the program with parents and students before taking a plan before the Board of Education.

“Some people might object to having junior ROTC on the campus,” she said, “but I favor it. They do a lot of service both for the community and for the school.”
