About 300 inmates took over a prison near the eastern city of Dijon for six hours Sunday, setting fires that gutted part of the compound before riot police moved in and regained control.

At least two prisoners were injured during the police assault.

The inmates, who had no apparent demands, had refused to return to their cells after their daily period in the courtyard.

They seized control of two buildings in the compound after assaulting a guard, taking his keys and opening several cells. The guard fled.

The inmates set fire to mattresses, touching off a blaze that consumed most of one of the buildings.
