Dancers Kick Off College’s Culture Fair
Dressed in grass or leaf skirts, leis and other traditional attire, a group of Polynesian dancers, backed by a band, livened up the lunch hour at Ventura College’s Quad Stage on Monday.
About 200 students gathered around the stage--some to watch the dancers, others to learn the traditional dance routines, still others to enjoy the barbecued food.
The performance was part of the activities for Asian Pacific Islander Day, the opening day of a weeklong Culture Fair at the college.
Titled “Unity Through Diversity,” the fair seeks to promote understanding among the various cultures represented at the college, said organizer Michael Lamont of the Associated Students of Ventura College.
“This is an opportunity for us to learn about each other’s cultures,” said Sheila Resolme, president of the college’s Asian American Club.
The fair continues today with African American/West Indian Day. Wednesday is Chicano/Latino and Native American Day, and Thursday is Euro American Day.
A daylong open-air concert Friday--including performances by a Native American group, a mariachi band, Middle Eastern dancers, and hip-hop and alternative rock bands--begins at 11 a.m. at the college’s baseball field. Admission is free for ASVC members and $3 for nonmembers.
