BLOWN SIDEWAYS THROUGH LIFE by Claudia Shear (Delta: $8.95, 116 pp.). Jacqueline of all trades and mistress of none, Claudia Shear recounts stories she used in her Obie award winning one-woman show. “Life doesn’t have a topic sentence,” she asserts. “There is nothing as cliched as a story of a road traveled, of lessons learned, of obstacles overcome.” She supports this premise with a resume of the jobs she’s held: nude model, Wall Street proofreader, waitress, receptionist in a bordello. Her offbeat account of thankless toil seems increasingly relevant in an era of downsizing and out-sourcing.
