UAW Orders Workers Back to Plant: The United Auto Workers union ordered members at a General Motors assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio, back to work after they walked off the job to protest the firing of their shop chairman. The shop chairman, Al Alli, and the president of UAW Local 1112 issued a statement telling members to return to their jobs, but none of the first-shift workers went back. There was no indication whether the second shift would report to work. The strike halted production at the Lordstown plant, said GM spokesman Ray Deibel. He said it violated the company’s contract with the UAW, but would not say if striking workers would be fired. The local represents about 5,500 active workers at the plant, which assembles Chevrolet Cavaliers and Pontiac Sunfires.
