For Clergy, Charity Will Begin at Home

Share

Priests, rabbis and pastors will participate in Habitat for Humanity of Ventura County’s first-ever All Clergy Work Day on April 24.

“Our goal is to have at least one clergy member from each congregation or parish in Ventura County hammering, sawing, painting or doing general labor to work one day in building a home for a needy family,” said Austin Coe, chairman of the group’s church relations committee. “The building site may be in Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Fillmore or Oak View where Habitat has houses in various phases of construction.”

Clerics should bring their own tools if possible. Experienced volunteers will provide guidance where necessary.

Habitat for Humanity builds five to seven houses annually in the county. Qualified applicants must have a housing need, demonstrate an ability to pay a monthly mortgage and be prepared to contribute a minimum of 500 hours of sweat equity to build their house and homes for others.

“We hope the good example set by these ministers on All Clergy Work Day will be followed by members of their congregation,” Coe said.
