World IN BRIEF : LIBERIA : Militia Heads Warn Against Looting
Liberia’s two most powerful militia leaders criticized the recent wholesale looting of the capital, Monrovia, and warned that culprits would be “shot on sight” starting at nightfall. The warning after a meeting between Charles Taylor and Alhaji Kromah followed a day in which gun and mortar fire crackled through the wreckage-strewn capital. The shooting intensified in the afternoon, forcing residents off the streets after a morning lull, but mortar shelling of the Barclay Training Center barracks in downtown Monrovia died down. A spokesman for warlord Roosevelt Johnson said he had ordered more fighters into the city to support a standoff against Taylor and his militia allies.
