Consultant to Study Sites for Art Center

As part of its ongoing effort to establish Ventura as a cultural haven, the City Council has agreed to pay an East Coast consultant $44,850 to conduct a detailed study of possible sites for a performing arts center.

The Wolf Organization of Cambridge, Mass., will spend six months cataloging the needs of the city’s artistic community, surveying potential funding sources and identifying facilities that could be remodeled into a performance venue.

In 1992, the City Council adopted a cultural plan aimed at promoting the arts. It called for the creation of a performance facility, and $50,000 was set aside in the city’s budget for a study.

Since then, various downtown locations have been suggested as potential sites.

By November, the Wolf Organization is expected to recommend the top two or three existing facilities that could be turned into performance sites.

The study will also look at areas downtown that could be rezoned to promote a community of studios in which artists could live and work.
