Crash-Test Ratings: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration inspectors drove 90 cars and trucks at a speed of 35 mph into a fixed barrier and then rated their condition on a scale of one to five stars, with one star representing the lowest level of protection in a head-on collision. Only two of the cars tested were given a one-star rating for either the driver or passenger side of the car, and both were Chevrolets--the S-10 Blazer and the S-10 pickup. Chevrolet is a division of General Motors. Five models got two stars: Chevrolet’s Caprice Sedan and Corsica compact, GM’s Geo tracker, Chrysler’s Jeep Wrangler and Toyota’s Tacoma pickup. General Motors criticized the crash tests, saying they don’t accurately represent what happens in a real crash. Among the models to get five-star ratings for the driver side are the Lexus ES 300, Dodge Avenger, Ford Probe, Audi A6, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Lumina, Ford Contour, Ford Mustang, Ford Thunderbird, Volvo 850, Ford Crown Victoria, Pontiac Bonneville, Ford Bronco, Dodge Dakota pickup, Dodge Ram pickup, Ford Windstar van and the Pontiac Trans Sport van.
