Not Much Money for His Labor
If Michael A. Straeter pulls off a huge upset and wins the battle for the helm of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor next month, he undoubtedly will be delighted. But he won’t be any richer.
In fact, Straeter would have to take a pay cut. He currently earns $115,000 a year as president of Santa Monica-based Local 1442 of the United Food and Commercial Workers union, far more than the $82,000 salary that goes with the executive secretary-treasurer’s job at the county labor federation.
“It goes with the turf,” Straeter said matter-of-factly. “I didn’t even know what the exact pay was.”
