Share

A local branch of AmeriCorps, President Clinton’s national service organization, is sponsoring a community cleanup today in conjunction with city agencies and local community groups.

The focus will be on two areas, event coordinator America Bowen said: the 2000 block of West Myrtle Street near Raitt Street, and the neighborhood around Carver Elementary School, 1401 W. Santa Ana Blvd.

Work will include picking up trash, removing graffiti and painting a mural at Friendship Park on Duchess Lane.

Work at Carver Elementary will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., while Myrtle Street efforts will be from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Refreshments for the volunteers have been donated by local businesses. Tools and other materials will be provided by the city of Santa Ana.

The cleanup is in conjunction with National Service Day. Bowen said she expects at least 250 children and adults to pitch in.

Helen Brown, administrator of the AmeriCorps program, said the cleanup is a way for people to show their interest in improving the community. Information: (714) 835-0409.
