SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A former Fillmore High School teacher who admitted to having sex with one of his students was sentenced Monday to a year in jail.

Daniel V. Ramirez, 41, also agreed to turn in his teaching credential and pay a $2,500 fine. He was a bilingual math and science teacher in his second year at Fillmore High School after spending time as a substitute teacher in the Oxnard School District.

Ramirez was arrested on campus in February after rumors began circulating of an alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student last year, investigators said. The girl is now an 18-year-old senior.

Investigators said the girl’s parents were aware that Ramirez, who has no prior criminal record, and the student had a dating relationship but were unaware of any sexual contact.

Ramirez pleaded no contest to one felony count of unlawful sex with a minor. A no-contest plea is the same as a pleading guilty but cannot be used against a defendant in any lawsuits that might be filed in connection with the crime.

On Monday, Superior Court Judge Allan L. Steele declined to reduce the charge to a misdemeanor and ordered Ramirez to attend a treatment program for sex offenders.

Steele also placed Ramirez on four years probation and ordered the Port Hueneme resident to “not associate with children under 18 years nor reside with any female child under 18 without approval of a probation officer.”

Steele allowed Ramirez to serve his sentence in the county’s work-release program, which allows inmates to work during the day. Ramirez will spend nights at the jail. He remains free on his own recognizance and is due to report to jail by May 6.
