Eight out of 10 Americans say they exercise regularly, although only half get the amount of strenuous exercise recommended for cardiovascular fitness, according to a survey published Monday by Prevention magazine.

But 68% reported they are overweight, up from 58% in 1983.

The number of Americans who exercise regularly has climbed steadily since 1983, when only 34% of those surveyed said they did, according to the Prevention Magazine Index, an annual report on health and fitness.

The survey polled 1,257 randomly selected adults across the country, but did not list the margin of error.
