Wrigley to Close Santa Cruz Plant: Chicago-based Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. said the chewing gum factory closure will result in charges of $24 million over the next 12 months. More than half the factory’s 311 employees will be eligible to transfer to other Wrigley plants, the company said. The rest will be laid off. Operations will be closed down gradually until the second quarter of 1997, when the plant will be closed permanently.
