HOFFMAN ELECTED MAYOR

A former Lawndale city councilwoman who demanded a recount of the ballots cast in the city’s mayoral race earlier this month lost the seat again Tuesday.

Nancy Marthens, who gave up her council seat to run for mayor, originally lost the race to incumbent Harold Hoffman by 11 votes. Although Marthens picked up two votes after Tuesday’s recount because two ballots had not been punched properly, the additional votes were not enough to change the final results, City Clerk Sandy Forrest said.

Marthens, who served on the council for four years, believed that many people who requested absentee ballots also voted at the polls during the April 9 election. She paid the city’s election consulting firm $1,200 with leftover campaign funds to recount the ballots to be sure the results were accurate. Marthens could not be reached for comment.
