Youth / News for the 18-and-under crowd : Council Honors 5-Year-Old Hero

Five-year-old Brittany Bell has been honored by the City Council for courageous and mature actions that officials say saved her grandfather’s life.

Brittany was visiting her grandparents, both wheelchair-bound, when her grandfather, Noel Bell, 66, had a heart attack. The child made a 911 call to summon paramedics.

“She handled the call so calm and collectedly, sometimes adults don’t do that so good,” Fire Chief Bernard F. Heimos said. “She was extremely mature in her delivery.”

Noel Bell attended a recent council meeting at which his granddaughter was presented with a certificate of appreciation and a T-shirt that says, “Fountain Valley Proud.”

Heimos presented her with a 911 teddy bear, and dispatcher Candice Howell, who assisted Brittany with the call, also gave her a stuffed Dalmatian puppy.
