Chameleon Images: McDonald’s Corp., seeking to capitalize on the popularity of Chicago Bulls player Dennis Rodman, is offering Chicago-area consumers a series of collectors’ cups that are supposed to change color as often as the basketball star’s hair. Trouble is some of the cups don’t do what they’re supposed to--which may be fitting, since the volatile Rodman doesn’t always do what is expected either. The 32-ounce plastic cups feature the tattooed and pierced power forward in his No. 91 Bulls jersey. Depending on which of the four styles is purchased, Rodman’s white hair is supposed to change to hot pink, green or blue when an ice-cold drink is poured to the top. On one cup, McDonald’s golden arches appear on the back of his head. A “small supply” of the cups was defective, a McDonald’s spokeswoman said. Marketing experts might say McDonald’s is taking a risk by associating itself with the unpredictable Rodman, who among other things has been suspended this season for head-butting an official. The possibility of a soured promotion doesn’t seem to worry McDonald’s, though. “McDonald’s for a long time has supported the Chicago Bulls, and obviously Dennis Rodman is one of their strongest team members right now,” McDonald’s spokeswoman Louise Edwards said.
