CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL PERFORMANCE REPORTS : High School Report Cards

The Times today is publishing selected “quality indicators” on Ventura County high schools released by the California Department of Education. Compiled on every public high school in the state, the information is intended to help parents, educators and policymakers spot trends and devise ways to improve achievement in their local schools.

The figures are based on data for the 1994-95 school year. The figures on public college attendance reflect performance in the 1993-94 school year, the latest available.

Included here are figures showing the increase or decrease over two years in a given category. Also shown are the state rank, a percentile allowing comparison to all schools in the state; and a comparison group rank, which allows comparison to 100 schools considered similar in such features as enrollment size and students’ English language proficiency and socioeconomic status.

KEYS TO THE TABLES

- To find your school:

- School districts are listed alphabetically and marked with a “*”--find your district first. Your individual school will be listed alphabetically under the district heading. District, county and state numbers reflect not only students enrolled in regular high schools but also any students enrolled in alternative or continuation high schools.

- Here are explanations of the quality indicator categories, found under the name of each district or school:

- Four-year completion rate is an estimate of the rate at which ninth-grade students will stay in school through the 12th grade. The percent or rate could not be calculated for high schools that do not contain the ninth grade.

- Career-vocational education enrollment rate shows the percentage of student enrollment in at least one career or vocational course.

- A-F enrollment rate shows the percentage of class enrollments that meet admissions requirements set by the University of California. These include two years of U.S. history, four years of English, three years of math, two years of laboratory science, two years of foreign language and two years of college-preparatory electives.

- College attendance shows the percent of graduates who enrolled as freshmen in fall 1994 at the University of California, California State University or at a California community college. If data was incomplete for community college attendance, no calculation was made.

- SAT/ACT shows the percent of students who achieved a combined math-verbal SAT score of at least 900 or ACT score of at least 21. Those cutoffs were based on 1991 national average scores. The SAT, which measures verbal and mathematical reasoning, and the ACT, which measures development in English, math, social studies and science, are widely used college admissions exams.

- Four measures or rankings are provided in each indicator category:

- In the first numerical column: Rate, or the percentage of students who have met the criteria defined in each of the indicator categories.

- In the second numerical column: 2-Yr Growth, or the increase or decrease between 1994-95 and 1992-93.

- In the third numerical column: CA rank, or the percentile ranking of a school compared to all California high schools. A school in the 60th percentile, for example, performs better than 60% of the state’s high schools.

- In the fourth numerical column: CG rank, or comparative group rank, where each school is compared to 100 others deemed similar in enrollment, socioeconomic background and other features.

NOTES

- “NA” means that the study did not make calculations in this category.

- “--” means data was insufficient to make a calculation.

- Percentages are rounded off to the nearest tenth of a percent.
